Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is in favour of FIFA’s decision to expand the World Cup to 48 teams as he believes players will be better protected.
It was declared on Tuesday that the proposition of 16 gatherings of three groups from the 2026 competition onwards has been endorsed by the FIFA Council.
The compelling European Club Association – of which United are a part – communicated their dissatisfaction in the development to the meeting in Zurich, yet Mourinho is behind the change.
He told FIFA.com: "I'm absolutely in support. As a club administrator, if the development implied more amusements, less occasions and less pre-season for players, I would state no. Be that as it may, it's essential for pundits to examine and comprehend that development doesn't mean more matches. Players are secured and clubs are ensured along these lines.
"I lean toward gatherings of three. Two matches and afterward through to the knockout stages or go home. Along these lines, the two gathering matches are critical, then the knockout stage is next which brings much more feeling.
"Groups with less potential and experience will likely play two matches and go home. Be that as it may, they would do as such having enhanced and picked up involvement on the pitch, which would be added to the monetary prizes of showing up at the finals – incorporating further interest in their footballing foundation.
"The extension implies that the World Cup will be much a greater amount of an extraordinary get-together. More nations, more interest in various nations in foundation, in youth football.
"More countries participating means more energy, more satisfaction, more excitement. More nations means more Africans, Asians, Americans together.
"Football is created in the clubs, so we can't anticipate that football will detonate as far as quality at a World Cup. The World Cup is a get-together and football can't give up this chance to additionally mirror fans' energy."
